Huckleberry Memories

There is an open bag of frozen huckleberries on the counter, ready for my mom to make into Christmas jams for the relatives. Snow covers the ground, but one taste takes me back months… years. Even frozen, an unbaked huckleberry has the taste of pure, unadulterated summer. It is the warmth of shaded afternoons in the forest, listening to the low buzz of insects and the rustle of leaves as we pick. It is my brothers crashing through the undergrowth as they move onto a more profitable patch to munch from. A huckleberry tastes like telling stories while we sit on the beargrass, brushing away stray spiderwebs. It is eating packed sandwiches
